Pope Francis’ funeral: Spontaneous applause erupts at the Vatican as Ukrainian President Zelenskyy arrives

Zelenskyy arrives at Vatican: Spontaneous applause filled St Peter’s Square as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived for the funeral of Pope Francis.

Around 50 world leaders and 10 reigning monarchs gathered in Vatican City for the ongoing funeral service. Zelenskyy was among a stream of world leaders taking their seats in St Peter’s Square ahead of the ceremony.

As the crowd noticed his arrival and his image appeared on screens around the square, applause broke out. Among the other notable attendees is US President Donald Trump, whose administration continues efforts to broker a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow.

Zelenskyy’s spokesperson, Sergiy Nykyforov, confirmed that the Ukrainian President had a brief meeting with President Trump in Rome prior to the funeral, saying, “The meeting took place and is already over,” without providing further details.

Former US President Joe Biden, the only Catholic elected to the presidency since John F. Kennedy in 1960, is also attending alongside his wife, Jill Biden.
