Wike Discloses Why He Opposed Atiku in 2023

Wike Reveals 2023 Motives:  The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that his opposition to Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential bid was driven by principle, not personal grievances over not being selected as Atiku’s running mate.

Wike explained that his stance was rooted in his firm support for power rotation, insisting it was unacceptable for power to remain in the North after President Buhari’s eight-year tenure.

“I supported power rotation. I couldn’t accept that after eight years of Buhari, power would stay in the North. It wasn’t about being picked as a running mate—it was about principle. The decision was tough, but necessary. Atiku was not an option for me; he was a no-go area,” Wike stated.

The former Rivers State Governor also accused Atiku of lacking integrity, claiming that dishonesty was a major factor in his opposition.

“From the start, I told my delegates that Atiku does not keep his word,” Wike said.

He recalled how Atiku, Bukola Saraki, and Uche Secondus allegedly misled him in 2019, promising he would nominate the attorney general and petroleum minister if they won the election. However, Wike said he was excluded from the legal team’s formation and found out about it on television.

“I called Saraki and reminded him of the promises they made. That was when I knew Atiku wouldn’t keep his word. I’ve never relied on what he says—and I never will,” he added.
