Warrant reveals political motive: Arson Suspect’s Alleged Motive
Cody A. Balmer, 38, has been charged with arson, attempted murder, and other offenses after allegedly setting fire to the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence. According to a report, Balmer told a 911 operator that he targeted Gov. Josh Shapiro due to his perceived stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The Incident
On April 13, Balmer allegedly:
– Scaled a wall: Surrounding the Harrisburg mansion
– Smashed windows: And hurled Molotov cocktails inside to start the blaze
– Entered the residence: After starting the fire
Fortunately, nobody was injured, but parts of the residence were severely damaged.

The 911 Call
According to the search warrant, Balmer called 911 less than an hour after fleeing the residence and:
– Identified himself: By name
– Stated his motive: Shapiro “will not take part in his plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people”
Gov. Josh Shapiro’s Stance
Shapiro, who is Jewish, has been an outspoken supporter of Israel and has opposed certain policies enacted by President Donald Trump. His family hosted a Passover celebration just hours before the attack.
Investigation
Corporal Benjamin Forsythe of the Pennsylvania State Police reportedly wrote in the warrant that Balmer targeted Shapiro “based upon perceived injustices to the people of Palestine.” The investigation is ongoing.
