WAEC denies exam cancellation

WAEC denies rumors about the cancellation of the 2025 English Language exam.

WAEC denies exam cancellation: The Nigerian Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted the viral rumor claiming that the English Language exam held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, as part of the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates, has been cancelled, and that a new date for the exam will be announced soon.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 2, by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, the examination body clarified that the alleged press release circulating online did not originate from the Council and confirmed that the exam has not been cancelled.

The statement reads:

“The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has been made aware of a supposed press release spreading on various social media platforms. The release, dated Friday, May 30, 2025, claims that the English Language paper written on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, during the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates, has been cancelled and that a new date will be announced soon.

The management of WAEC wishes to state that this press release did not come from the Council. The exam in question has not been cancelled. While the source of this misinformation remains unknown, the Council believes it is being spread by individuals seeking to tarnish the Council’s reputation and to create confusion and panic among candidates who took the exam.

The Council also takes this opportunity to remind the public and all stakeholders that official information from WAEC is released only through our verified social media accounts and accredited media outlets nationwide. Additionally, all press releases are officially issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.

We sincerely thank all stakeholders for their trust over the seventy-three (73) years of conducting examinations, and we pledge to continually pursue innovative ways to provide quality service to Nigerian students.”
