Inspector General of Police orders nationwide withdrawal of mobile police officers assigned to VIPs

VIP security duties discontinued: Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered the immediate withdrawal of Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel from providing security services to private individuals across the country. The directive, issued during a conference with PMF squadron commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, aims to refocus the unit on its core responsibilities.

According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized that the PMF—regarded as the elite tactical arm of the Nigeria Police Force—must return to its primary duties, which include responding to riots, emergencies, and violent threats, rather than serving as escorts or personal security for VIPs and private citizens.

Egbetokun criticized the current misuse of PMF operatives for private purposes, calling it a distortion that weakens the force’s operational efficiency. He asserted that such deployments undermine the unit’s ability to fulfill its essential mission.

As part of a broader reform initiative, the police chief announced several measures to enhance professionalism and accountability within the PMF. These include mandatory quarterly training sessions focused on ethics and professional conduct, and the requirement for all squadrons to maintain fully equipped and combat-ready units on standby at all times.

The IGP warned that commanders will be held responsible for the behavior of their personnel and urged them to lead proactively through consistent inspections, direct engagement, and strong mentorship. He stated that the reforms are designed to restore discipline, promote human rights, and elevate the PMF’s operational standards in line with global best practices.

Egbetokun reaffirmed the commitment to repositioning the PMF as a disciplined and dependable tactical unit. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his continued support and acknowledged the role of international partners in enhancing the technical capabilities of the force.

He concluded by urging all PMF commanders to adopt the reforms not only as official policy but also as a professional and moral duty to the nation.
