Uzodimma defends Tinubu’s intervention: Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has justified President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in the political situation in Rivers State, calling it a necessary step to protect key national economic assets and prevent further unrest.
During an interview in Lagos, Uzodimma—who leads the National Economic Council’s subcommittee on crude oil theft—explained that the federal government had to act swiftly following the sabotage of pipelines that posed a threat to Nigeria’s oil production targets.
“When those pipelines were attacked, it became essential to secure our production levels,” Uzodimma said. “As we work to ramp up output, we cannot allow disruptions that could further reduce our quota or lead to losses.”
He noted that President Tinubu, in his role as Chief Security Officer of the nation, consulted with relevant stakeholders before stepping in. He expressed concern over the growing tensions in Rivers State and warned of the consequences if the state House of Assembly had gone through with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stating that such crises could set a troubling precedent.

“Power comes from God,” Uzodimma remarked. “If someone is destined to govern, divine protection will follow. But when conflict threatens national economic stability, federal intervention becomes necessary.”
Uzodimma also pushed back against claims of favoritism in federal appointments, particularly toward the South-West. He stressed the importance of merit-based selections to tackle Nigeria’s challenges and commended President Tinubu’s reform-oriented leadership, contrasting it with the previous administration.
On the issue of insecurity, the governor attributed much of the violence in Imo State to political actors dissatisfied with election outcomes. He reaffirmed his administration’s dual approach of using both force and non-violent methods, including youth empowerment and infrastructure development, to restore peace.

Addressing the debate over state police, Uzodimma confirmed that all 36 state governors, along with the Federal Capital Territory, have endorsed the initiative. The proposal is now awaiting legislative action by the National Assembly.
