UTME registration process guide: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that candidates are free to take their Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) anywhere in Nigeria, regardless of their state of registration.
This clarification comes in response to a misleading report that falsely claimed candidates are restricted to writing the exam only within the state where they registered.
JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, addressed the misinformation on Wednesday, stating that the report is inaccurate and should be disregarded.
“In a recent interview with a NAN reporter, I explained that candidates are not limited to taking the exam within their state of registration. They can register from any part of the country and choose any town as their examination location,” he said.
Benjamin further explained that CBT (Computer-Based Test) centres are grouped by towns for candidates’ convenience, and candidates are allowed to select the specific town where they wish to sit for the exam.

“For example, if a candidate picks Garki as their exam town, they must take the exam there — not in a different town. The idea that they could be posted elsewhere is simply incorrect,” he said.
He emphasized the need to correct the false narrative to avoid creating confusion among candidates. “A candidate who registers in Lagos can choose to write the exam in Sokoto or any other location across the country. This flexibility is intended to accommodate individual preferences,” Benjamin added.
He urged the public to disregard the erroneous report entirely.
