US urges ceasefire proposal: The United States has urged Russia to accept a comprehensive ceasefire proposal in Ukraine, calling it “Russia’s best possible outcome” and encouraging President Vladimir Putin to seize the opportunity for peace. The proposal, which has already been accepted by Ukraine, includes a 30-day halt to all hostilities, encompassing land, air, sea, and attacks on critical infrastructure.
Acting Deputy U.S. Ambassador John Kelley emphasized the importance of working with Russia to achieve peace, stating, “We want to work with Russia, including on this peace initiative and an economic package. There is no military solution to this conflict.” Kelley stressed that the deal on offer is Russia’s best possible outcome, asserting, “The deal on offer now is Russia’s best possible outcome. President Putin should take the deal.”
This push for a ceasefire comes as U.S. President Donald Trump begins his second term, having vowed to swiftly end Russia’s three-year-old war in Ukraine. The U.S. has been urging Russia to accept the ceasefire, warning that continued aggression could lead to stepped-back negotiation efforts and the imposition of further sanctions. Kelley stated, “If Russia makes the wrong decision to continue this catastrophic war, the United States will have to consider stepping back from our negotiation efforts to end this conflict.”
Following a phone call between Trump and Putin last week, Russia is expected to provide a term sheet outlining its vision for a ceasefire. The U.S. will assess Russia’s commitment to peace based on the contents of this document and, more importantly, its actions. Kelley condemned Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine, saying they do not demonstrate a genuine desire for peace.
In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Moscow has drafted a memorandum outlining a settlement position in the Ukraine war. However, Ukraine claims that Moscow has not yet shared its proposal. Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia expressed Moscow’s intention to continue serious, direct negotiations with Ukraine, suggesting a second round of talks in Istanbul.

Ukraine’s Deputy U.N. Ambassador Khrystyna Hayovyshyn criticized Russia, stating that it is not signaling any genuine intention to stop its war. She urged countries to impose stronger sanctions on Moscow, emphasizing Ukraine’s commitment to diplomacy while asserting that Kyiv will never recognize Russia’s claim to any occupied Ukrainian territory. Hayovyshyn stressed, “We will not tolerate interference in sovereign decisions, including our defense or alliances. There must be no appeasement of the aggressor. Such attempts only embolden future aggression.”
The positions of both nations remain clear: the U.S. and Ukraine seek a comprehensive ceasefire, while Russia’s intentions and actions continue to be scrutinized by the international community.
