US Revokes Student Visas

US instructs Nigerian and other international students with revoked visas to leave the country

US Revokes Student Visas: Hundreds of international students are being compelled to leave the United States amid a stringent crackdown on student visas by the Trump administration.

According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security has ramped up efforts to identify and deport students, including individuals who have not been formally charged with any wrongdoing. “Do not attempt to remain in the United States. The federal government will find you,” read an email allegedly from the Department, shared by immigration attorney Nicole Micheroni.

Immigration lawyer Dustin Baxter, who is representing over 100 students in a lawsuit against the government, noted that visa revocations are being carried out arbitrarily. “They would revoke a person’s student visa not only without a conviction but sometimes based solely on an arrest—or even just an encounter or a citation,” Baxter told CNN.

Some students only discovered that their visas had been revoked after being contacted by their schools, while many educational institutions were also unaware. Stanford University, for instance, found that four students and two recent graduates had lost their visas during a routine check of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) on April 4.

This represents a major policy shift. Previously, designated school officials were responsible for initiating visa revocations in SEVIS. However, according to Jeff Joseph, president-elect of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is now bypassing educational institutions and acting independently.

One of the most widely publicized incidents involved Tufts University doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained in handcuffs by immigration agents after her visa was revoked without warning. Surveillance footage presented in court reportedly showed Öztürk “shrieking in fear and confusion” as she was apprehended.

The Trump administration has justified these actions, citing legal provisions that allow for visa cancellations on grounds of national security or foreign policy. Secretary of State Marco Rubio referenced a clause permitting visa revocation if an individual’s presence could cause “serious foreign policy consequences.”

A statement from the State Department emphasized the government’s “broad authority” to revoke visas at any point, even after issuance. “We continuously monitor visa holders… and will revoke their visas and deport them if they do not comply with regulations,” the agency stated.

The crackdown has sparked widespread fear among international students, many of whom now face unexpected detentions, deportations, and major disruptions to their academic pursuits—even in cases where no formal charges or due process have been involved.
