University of Massachusetts Student Charged with Firebombing Tesla Dealership

Student Charged with Firebombing:  A 19-year-old University of Massachusetts Boston student, Owen McIntire, has been arrested and charged in connection with the firebombing of a Tesla dealership during Spring Break, according to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday, April 18. FBI agents apprehended McIntire on the UMass Boston campus, and the suspect appeared in court the same day.

A federal criminal complaint states that McIntire faces charges of unlawful possession of an unregistered destructive device and malicious damage by fire to property used in interstate commerce. The incident occurred on March 17 at a Tesla dealership in Kansas City, McIntire’s hometown, while they were on break from school.

Investigators allege that McIntire parked a block away, approached the dealership on foot, and used a Molotov cocktail — made from an apple cider vinegar bottle and a rag — to ignite the fire before fleeing. The blaze caused damage to two Cybertrucks and two Tesla charging stations, with estimated losses exceeding $200,000.

Authorities were initially alerted when an officer noticed smoke rising from a Cybertruck. Surveillance footage and witness accounts helped identify McIntire, who was captured wearing distinctive dark, flowing clothing and a wide-brimmed hat. The suspect allegedly discarded the hat nearby, which was later recovered and tested for DNA.

Additional evidence placing McIntire at the scene includes photos showing them with luggage at Kansas City International Airport around the time of the attack.

This is the second arrest linked to a string of arson attacks targeting Tesla dealerships across the country.
