Ukraine conflict territorial shifts: Russian troops have captured two settlements in the Donetsk region and one in Ukraine’s northern region of Sumy, according to the Russian Defence Ministry. The ministry stated that its forces seized the village of Stupochky in Donetsk region, east of Kostiantynivka, a town under recent Russian pressure. Additionally, Russian forces took control of Otradne, a village further west along the 1,000-km front, and announced the capture of Loknya, a village inside the Russian border in Sumy region.
The Ukrainian military’s general staff has not acknowledged these losses. Instead, they reported that Ukrainian troops halted 18 frontline Russian attacks in several towns, including Otradne. Earlier this week, Ukraine’s military referred to Stupochky as part of an area under Russian attack. For months, Ukraine has reported attempts by Russian forces to occupy areas of Sumy region but has never acknowledged capturing any of them.
Still on Ukraine conflict territorial shifts
The situation on the ground remains unclear, with Reuters unable to independently verify battlefield accounts from either side. Ukraine’s DeepState military blog, which uses open-source reports, noted that Russian forces have taken up positions along a line of border villages for the first time.
This development comes as Russia continues to advance slowly on the eastern front of the war in Ukraine, focusing on capturing the Donbas region, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk. In recent months, Moscow has also attempted to advance in Sumy region, particularly after Russia’s military claimed to have ousted Ukrainian troops from the Russian border region of Kursk.
Recent Developments in the Region:
– Capture of Radkivka: Russia’s Defence Ministry announced the capture of Radkivka, a village outside the northeastern city of Kupiansk, which has been under pressure for months.
– Kupiansk Under Attack: Kupiansk Mayor Andrii Besedin reported that the attacks are taking a toll, including two city workers killed on Friday. Besedin stated that the city is 90% destroyed, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The conflict continues to escalate, with both sides reporting losses and ongoing battles. The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as the conflict continues.
