Tina Knowles reconciled secretly: In her newly published memoir Matriarch, Tina Knowles—mother of music icons Beyoncé and Solange—reveals a previously undisclosed chapter of her life: a brief reconciliation with ex-husband Mathew Knowles following their 2009 divorce filing.
The couple had initially separated after Mathew’s infidelity, which resulted in the birth of a child with another woman. Despite the betrayal, Tina shared that she was drawn back to him after he pursued counseling and made sincere efforts to make amends.
“He’d changed after new counseling,” she wrote. “I didn’t believe him at first, but he was persistent, proved he’d gotten help, and as he courted me, I found myself falling in love again. The magnetic pull between us… was stronger than ever.”
Tina explained that she originally filed for divorce because she felt she had “no choice” after Mathew’s affair. Yet in 2010, the pair quietly rekindled their relationship, going to great lengths to keep it a secret to avoid upsetting their daughters.
The reunion was revealed unexpectedly when Beyoncé and Solange paid a surprise visit to Tina’s home in Galveston, Texas, on Mother’s Day. Tina recalled Beyoncé reacting calmly, while Solange responded more emotionally.

Though they reconciled for a time, Tina ultimately chose to end the relationship for good, finalizing their divorce in 2011. She later married actor Richard Lawson in 2015; that marriage ended in divorce in 2024.
Reflecting on her emotional journey, Tina wrote, “I clearly knew my relationship with Mathew was unhealthy, and it was the fear of going it alone that kept me stuck.”
