Harvard Law Review discrimination: The Trump administration has initiated an investigation into Harvard University and its renowned Harvard Law Review, claiming that the journal’s article selection process may involve racial discrimination, according to a statement released by federal officials on Monday.
This inquiry is part of a wider effort by President Donald Trump to scrutinize American universities, which he accuses of promoting anti-Semitism, anti-white bias, and “gender ideology” through their support of transgender students. Harvard, one of the country’s most prestigious universities, recently had billions in federal funding frozen after refusing to adhere to new federal oversight requirements. In response, the university filed a lawsuit against the administration last week.
The U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services jointly announced that they had received reports about Harvard Law Review’s “policies and practices for journal membership and article selection that may violate” Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Title VI prohibits discrimination on the grounds of race, color, or national origin by institutions receiving federal funds.
“Harvard Law Review’s article selection process appears to pick winners and losers on the basis of race,” stated Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights at the Department of Education. “The Trump administration will not tolerate any institution, including Harvard, infringing on civil rights.”
Established in 1887, the Harvard Law Review is a student-run journal known for publishing influential legal scholarship. Former President Barack Obama served as its first Black president in 1990, a milestone often referenced in his political rise.
Still on Harvard Law Review discrimination
A Harvard Law School spokesperson informed AFP that the institution is dedicated to legal compliance and thoroughly investigating any credible allegations of misconduct. They also emphasized that the Harvard Law Review operates independently of the law school and pointed to a similar 2018 claim that was ultimately dismissed.
The investigation follows several weeks of protests at Harvard, where students and faculty have rallied against the Trump administration’s actions. Demonstrators gathered around the John Harvard statue in Cambridge earlier this month, holding signs and condemning what they view as a politically motivated attack on academic freedom.
