State of emergency Spain: Spain has declared a state of emergency following a nationwide power outage that has caused widespread gridlock on roads and led to panic-buying.
The Interior Ministry confirmed the declaration and stated that the emergency status would apply to regions requesting it, as concerns grow that the disruption could last for days.
The blackout has caused nationwide confusion, prompting the deployment of 30,000 police officers to maintain security during the evening’s darkness.
This follows long lines outside stores and banks as residents and tourists scrambled to stockpile essentials and withdraw cash in the face of uncertainty.
Airports have also been affected, with many flights delayed or cancelled. TAP Air, Portugal’s flagship airline, has warned holidaymakers not to travel until further notice.
Train and metro services were suspended in both Spain and Portugal, leaving people trapped in tunnels and on tracks, leading to evacuations.

So far, Madrid, Andalusia, and Extremadura have requested the central government take control of public order and other functions.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez informed the public that the cause of the power outages remains unclear but confirmed that power has been restored to about 60 percent of the country.
Portugal’s acting Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, indicated that power is expected to be fully restored “within hours,” though it may take longer in Portugal due to its reliance on resources from France and Morocco, unlike Spain, which also draws from these countries.
In a national address, Pedro Sanchez reassured the public, saying, “We do not yet have conclusive information on the reasons for this power cut, so I ask the people, as we have done in past crises, to get their information through official channels. For now, there is no evidence of any civil protection issues. I repeat, there are no security problems.”
