South Western Railway services transitioned to public ownership.

 

Railway services public ownership: From May 25, 2025, the operation of all South Western Railway services has transferred into public ownership, with DfT Operator Ltd (DFTO) taking over management. This change does not affect planned journeys, tickets, or timetables, and all current tickets remain valid.

 

DFTO is a public sector owning group established by the government to manage train companies as they transition into public ownership ahead of the creation of Great British Railways (GBR). With this transfer, publicly owned operators under DFTO now oversee a significant portion of the rail network. They are responsible for over 25% of the network, covering more than 455 million passenger miles, operating over 6,000 services each day, and employing almost 24,000 colleagues.

DFTO’s primary purpose is to unify and integrate train operations under common public ownership, working towards achieving this vision.
