Real Madrid New Coach: Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, ahead of taking over as Real Madrid’s new coach.
Alonso has been linked with a return to the Santiago Bernabeu for some time, with growing pressure on Carlo Ancelotti after a disappointing season with Los Blancos.
The Spanish manager led Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic double last season, with just one loss across all competitions—the Europa League final in their final match of the campaign.
Ahead of Sunday’s last home game of the season, Alonso announced his departure, with several reports indicating he will move to Real Madrid.
“This week, the club and I have agreed that these will be my last two games as Leverkusen coach,” Alonso stated on Friday.
Still on Real Madrid New Coach
“This is the right moment to announce it because we’ve always had good communication with the club. We have to enjoy this moment with mixed emotions; it’s emotional! I spoke to the players and the staff, and it was not easy.
“We’ve had a great connection, and that’s been key. They believed in me, and they followed me. I want to have a proper goodbye this weekend.”
During his time as Leverkusen’s manager, Alonso has overseen 138 games, winning 88 of them, with an impressive 64% win rate.
In addition to being named the Bundesliga Coach of the Year last season, Alonso was also awarded ‘Best Coach of the Year’ by Globe Soccer in 2024.
