John Harbaugh Says Justin Tucker’s Future with Ravens Depends on Football Performance

Ravens Coach Talks Strategy: Ravens head coach John Harbaugh recently addressed the media, making it clear that any decisions concerning veteran kicker Justin Tucker’s future with the team will be grounded solely in football-related considerations. Harbaugh emphasized that there are several factors involved when evaluating a player’s role on the team, especially when it comes to competition at a specialist position like kicker.

“Every decision we make has to be based on football,” Harbaugh stated. “There’s a lot of layers to that.” He pointed out that the team recently drafted a promising young kicker, Tyler Loop from the University of Arizona, with an early sixth-round pick—186th overall—in the 2025 NFL Draft. “He’s a talented guy,” Harbaugh added, noting that the Ravens made a significant investment by selecting a kicker that high in the draft. According to him, the decision-making process will weigh not only performance but also factors such as salary cap implications and roster construction. “Whatever we decide to do over the next few weeks will be based on football,” he reiterated.

This firm stance on a football-only basis for personnel moves comes at a time when Tucker, a cornerstone of the Ravens franchise for over a decade, is facing off-field controversy. Multiple massage therapists have accused Tucker of sexual misconduct, allegations he has categorically denied, stating that the claims are “simply not true.” The NFL has opened an investigation into the matter, but as of now, the Ravens organization has chosen not to intervene or speculate until the league concludes its review.

Harbaugh clarified that the team has received no information from the NFL regarding the status of the investigation. “I would just say from a standpoint of the investigation and all that, I mean we don’t know anything,” he said. “We haven’t been given any information, and as it should be. It’s all done the way it’s done. So, we can’t make any decisions based on that.” This highlights the Ravens’ intention to separate the off-field issues from the on-field evaluation for now, focusing strictly on performance, potential, and team needs.

In the meantime, Baltimore finds itself in an unusual position: hosting a genuine competition for the kicking job. The selection of Tyler Loop marked the first time in franchise history that the Ravens have drafted a kicker. Loop brings with him a strong leg and solid college credentials, having nailed six of nine attempts from beyond 50 yards last season, including a booming 62-yarder.

Still, the challenge ahead for Loop is steep. Justin Tucker is widely considered the most accurate kicker in NFL history and holds the league’s longest field goal record at 66 yards. However, age and performance trends are beginning to factor in. At 35 years old, Tucker is coming off his most inconsistent season yet, converting just 73.3% of his field goal attempts in 2024—a sharp decline from his previous career average. Before this recent season, he had never finished below 82.5% in any year.

Despite the pressure, Harbaugh mentioned that Tucker has been present at the Ravens’ facility, staying active and preparing for the upcoming season. The real test will begin on May 27, when the team kicks off its organized team activities (OTAs). That’s when the true head-to-head battle between Tucker and Loop will commence.

Tucker is currently in the second year of a four-year, $24 million contract extension he signed in 2022. Financially, the Ravens stand to gain significant flexibility if they choose to part ways with him. Should they decide to trade or release him after June 1, the move would free up approximately $4.2 million in cap space for the 2025 season.

As the team moves closer to training camp, all eyes will be on this high-stakes competition, which blends performance, age, financial strategy, and off-field scrutiny into one of the more complex decisions facing the Ravens this offseason.
