Princess Mako welcomes child

Princess Mako of Japan, who left the royal family to marry her commoner husband, has welcomed her first child.

Princess Mako welcomes child: Princess Mako of Japan has given birth to her first child, according to an announcement from the Imperial Household Agency.

Mako Komuro, niece of Emperor Naruhito, left the royal family in 2021 after marrying her former college classmate Kei Komuro, who is a commoner.

The former princess, aged 33, relinquished her royal status upon marriage and relocated to New York, where her husband works as a lawyer.

She and her husband, also 33, have now welcomed their first child together.

At a press conference, a spokesperson for the agency stated that both mother and baby are healthy, but did not disclose the newborn’s name or gender.

Fumihito, Crown Prince Akishino, and Crown Princess Kiko, Mako’s parents, expressed their joy at the news and extended their best wishes to the family.

“This concerns someone who has left the Imperial Family, and we hoped she would live in a quiet environment,” said grand master Naomasa Yoshida during the conference, as reported by the Japan Times.

“However, we decided to make the announcement due to some media reports regarding the birth.”

Mako attracted global attention in 2021 when she gave up her royal status to marry her college sweetheart, 31-year-old Kei Komuro.

The couple wed in a civil ceremony in 2021, after which Mako moved to New York City to live with her husband.
