Playing Music Sparks Arrests: Taliban authorities have arrested fourteen individuals in northern Afghanistan for playing musical instruments and singing, activities that have been severely restricted since the group regained power in 2021.
According to a statement from provincial police on Saturday, May 10, the arrests occurred on Thursday night in the capital of Takhar province, where the group had gathered in a private home.
The statement indicated that the gathering took place at night, during which the individuals played instruments and sang, allegedly disturbing the public. The detainees are now under investigation.

Since taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has progressively enforced laws and policies based on their strict interpretation of Islamic law. One of the most notable restrictions is the broad ban on most forms of music, including live performances and the playing of recorded music at social events, in public spaces like restaurants, in vehicles, and across media broadcasts.
Following their return to power, Taliban officials closed music schools, destroyed musical instruments and sound systems, and condemned music as a source of moral corruption and public disorder. Wedding halls are now forbidden from playing music, though in some cases, women in segregated areas of such events continue the practice discreetly.
Many Afghan musicians have fled the country due to fear and the collapse of their profession in one of the world’s poorest nations. The Taliban has encouraged remaining artists to focus on Islamic poetry and unaccompanied vocal chants, which are among the few musical forms permitted under their rule, much like during their previous regime from 1996 to 2001.
