Peter Obi humanitarian visit

“May God guide us in our pursuit of a new Nigeria—one where everything isn’t turned into politics,” says Peter Obi after his humanitarian visit to Benue State was obstructed.

In a statement posted on Monday via X, Obi expressed disappointment with the Benue State Government’s response to his scheduled courtesy call and planned visits to internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps and health institutions.

He wrote:

“Ordinarily, I would not comment on this, as I’ve endured even worse experiences since declaring for the presidency. However, the events unfolding now compel me to speak out.

Still on Peter Obi humanitarian visit:

“Regarding what happened today (April 14) during my intended visit to Benue State, I’m unsure if the Governor—my younger brother and a Reverend Father I respect deeply—is even aware of the situation. After exhausting all efforts to reach him, I’m using this platform to ensure my message is heard.

“I had planned visits to Plateau and Benue States on April 13 and 14 respectively, to pay courtesy calls to their governors and visit IDP camps and schools of nursing to offer my support. As usual, I contacted the Plateau State Government and was warmly received. The Governor graciously welcomed me to spend time with IDPs in Bokkos.

“With Benue, I attempted multiple times to reach the Governor without success. I eventually got through to his ADC, who said the Governor was in an important meeting and would return my call before midnight. That call never came. Instead, I received a message from the ADC on Sunday evening stating he hadn’t been able to contact the Governor in three days—which I found troubling.

“Still, out of courtesy and commitment to the cause, I proceeded with my trip to Makurdi. But around 10 a.m. in Akwanga, my security team halted the journey after receiving a press release—allegedly from the Benue State Government—seemingly aimed at stopping my visit. The same statement was then forwarded to me by the Governor’s ADC, which curiously mirrored the itinerary I had earlier shared with him and the local security agencies.

“I must remind all involved that my visit was focused on supporting critical development areas—health, education, and humanitarian outreach. I’ve consistently done this, both in and out of politics. In the past, I even sought approval from then-President Goodluck Jonathan to visit earthquake-hit Haiti for similar support efforts.

“My plan in Benue included visiting a school being built by the Bishop in Gboko, a nursing school, and an IDP camp—purely out of compassion and concern for our people.

“May God guide us as we work to build a new Nigeria—one where acts of goodwill are not politicized, and where all citizens are free to contribute to the greater good of those in need.”
