OAU student electrocuted while trying to retrieve football from neighboring compound

OAU student electrocuted incident: A student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, enrolled in the Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) programme, has tragically died after being electrocuted while attempting to retrieve a football from a nearby compound.

According to the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the incident occurred during an evening football game when the ball accidentally landed in a fenced compound. In line with an informal rule among the players, the student who kicked the ball was responsible for retrieving it. The deceased, who was participating for the first time, entered the compound to retrieve the ball and successfully threw it back to his teammates.

However, on his way out, while attempting to climb the fence, the student reportedly made contact with a live wire, resulting in electrocution.

Still on OAU student electrocuted incident:

“It’s a deeply unfortunate incident. We lost a promising young student who had hopes of transitioning into the university after his CDL programme,” Olanrewaju said.

“When he didn’t return to the field promptly, his colleagues went to check on him and found him shivering. One of them used a stick to remove the wire from his hand, and he was rushed to the CDL medical facility, where he was declared dead. A subsequent visit to another hospital confirmed the same,” he added.

Olanrewaju also confirmed that the Director of the CDL, Professor Femi Koya, had informed the student’s family of the tragic event. He offered condolences on behalf of the university community, praying for strength and comfort for the student’s loved ones.
