Moscow dismisses ceasefire demands: The Kremlin has rejected Western demands for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, denouncing them as “unacceptable ultimatums.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, speaking during a press briefing on Monday, stated that such pressure would not influence Moscow’s position.
“This language of ultimatums is unacceptable for Russia. It doesn’t work. You can’t talk to Russia like that,” Peskov said, firmly dismissing the tone adopted by European leaders.
Despite the firm stance, Peskov reaffirmed Russia’s openness to peace negotiations. He referenced President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to resume direct talks in Istanbul without preconditions—talks which, according to Moscow, were abandoned by Ukraine in 2022.
“President Putin has clearly and unequivocally outlined our position. We remain committed to a serious pursuit of a long-term peaceful settlement,” Peskov added.
Meanwhile, Germany issued a strong warning on Monday, demanding that Russia agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire by the end of the day or face new EU sanctions. The announcement was made by German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius as European foreign ministers met in London to address the ongoing conflict, now in its fourth year.

“The Ukrainian president has demonstrated a willingness for peace and made considerable concessions in recent weeks. It is now Russia’s turn to reciprocate and engage in serious political dialogue,” Kornelius said.
This renewed push for a truce follows a visit to Kyiv by leaders from France, Germany, Poland, and the UK, who collectively urged Moscow to accept a temporary ceasefire as a step toward lasting peace.
In response, President Putin on Sunday proposed resuming direct talks in Istanbul starting May 15, expressing openness to the possibility of negotiating a new truce.
“We do not rule out the possibility that during these talks, a genuine ceasefire could be established—one that is respected by both sides. This could serve as the first step toward a sustainable peace, rather than just a pause before further hostilities,” Putin stated.
