Minister set to visit

Iran’s Foreign Minister set to visit China on Tuesday

Minister set to visit: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit China on Tuesday, ahead of the third round of nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, according to an announcement by Iran’s foreign ministry. The trip highlights continued diplomatic efforts to revive discussions on Iran’s nuclear program, with China being a key party to the 2015 nuclear accord known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The announcement came from ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei during a weekly press briefing on Monday. Although the Chinese foreign ministry did not confirm the visit, it noted that China and Iran “maintain exchanges and interactions at various levels and across different sectors.”

The JCPOA, established in 2015 to curb Iran’s nuclear activity in exchange for sanctions relief, was signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, Germany, and the European Union. Baqaei emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue with all original signatories as efforts continue to resolve the diplomatic stalemate.

Still on Minister set to visit

In 2018, former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal unilaterally, prompting Iran to reduce its commitments. Since returning to office, Trump has advocated for renewed nuclear talks with Tehran while also issuing warnings of potential military action.

The next round of US-Iran negotiations, expected to be held on Saturday, will again be mediated by Oman. Araghchi will represent Iran, while Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to lead the American team.

Despite facing tough US sanctions, Iran has maintained strong trade relations with China, its largest trading partner and top oil customer. Iranian media reports that nearly 92 percent of Iran’s oil exports go to China, often at discounted prices.

In 2021, Iran and China signed a 25-year strategic cooperation agreement spanning areas such as energy, infrastructure, security, and telecommunications, further strengthening ties between the two nations amid ongoing Western pressure on Tehran.
