Men In Bangladesh Protest

Men in Bangladesh have taken to the streets to protest a proposed measure for women’s rights.

Men In Bangladesh Protest: Thousands of supporters of an Islamist group gathered in Bangladesh’s capital on May 3 to protest proposed recommendations aimed at ensuring equal rights for men and women.

Leaders of the Hefazat-e-Islam group argued that the proposed legal reforms contradict Sharia law.

More than 20,000 followers of the group assembled near Dhaka University to oppose the proposed equal rights laws, including those regarding property rights for primarily Muslim women.

Some protesters carried banners and placards that read, “Say no to Western laws on our women, rise up Bangladesh.”

The group threatened to organize further rallies on May 23 nationwide if their demands are not met.

Mamunul Haque, a leader of the group, called for the abolition of the interim government’s reforms commission and for the punishment of its members for proposing the changes.

He claimed that the reforms hurt “the sentiments of the majority of the people” by labeling religious inheritance laws as the main cause of inequality between men and women.

The group’s leaders also demanded that the interim government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, ban the Awami League party led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in August.

Hasina’s opponents accuse her government of killing hundreds of students and others during the uprising that led to her 15-year rule’s end. Hasina has been in exile in India since her removal.

Islamist groups in Bangladesh have gained visibility since Hasina’s ousting, with minority groups reporting increased intimidation.
