Man devoured by pet: A man was mauled to death and partially eaten by his pet lion just days after acquiring the animal to keep in his backyard.
The incident occurred in Najaf, southern Iraq, where the predator launched a brutal attack on the man before consuming most of his body on Thursday, May 8.
“Today in a garden in the city of Kufa in Najaf, a citizen was attacked by a lion in his own garden and died instantly,” Mufid Tahir, a spokesperson for the Najaf Police, told local news outlet Rudaw.
Tahir noted that the lion had to be put down as it had devoured a large portion of the victim’s body and refused to move away from the remains.
The deceased, 50-year-old Aqil Fakhr al-Din, had reportedly kept lions and other wild animals in his backyard for several years. However, on Thursday, the newly acquired lion unexpectedly turned on its handler, fatally mauling and devouring him.

One of al-Din’s neighbors reportedly stepped in and fatally shot the lion with a Kalashnikov rifle, firing seven rounds, according to local television reports.
The victim was rushed to Al-Sadr Medical City Hospital in Najaf but succumbed to the severity of his injuries.
Disturbing images showed the man covered in blood on a hospital bed, and authorities have reportedly launched an official investigation into the incident.
A video of the dead lion lying in the garden has also been circulating on social media, sparking concerns over how al-Din was allowed to keep such a dangerous animal on his property. Local sources indicated that the lion had been purchased only days before the tragic attack, with plans to raise and tame it at home.
