Labour Party Turmoil: Julius Abure Faction Indefinitely Suspends Governor Alex Otti and Others

Labour Party Internal Conflict: The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has announced the indefinite suspension of six senior members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha, citing alleged anti-party activities.

Also suspended are Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi. According to the party’s National Executive Council (NEC), the decision was based on the findings of a five-member Disciplinary Committee established on May 2, 2025, to investigate conduct deemed harmful to the party’s interests.

In a statement released on Wednesday, May 7, and signed by National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party stated that the suspensions are effective immediately, barring the affected individuals from all Labour Party-related functions.

Still on Labour Party Internal Conflict

“Recall that on Friday, May 2, 2025, the NEC of the Labour Party set up a five-man Disciplinary Committee led by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi to investigate allegations of anti-party behavior against Governor Alex Otti and others,” the statement read.

“The committee has completed its assignment and submitted its report. After careful deliberation, the NEC has endorsed the committee’s recommendations.

Accordingly, the following members are suspended indefinitely:

  1. Dr. Alex Otti
  2. Senator Ireti Kingibe
  3. Senator Darlington Nwokocha
  4. Hon. Victor Afam Ogene
  5. Hon. Amobi Ogah
  6. Hon. Seyi Sowunmi”

When asked about Senator Nenadi Usman, the party clarified that she is not a registered Labour Party member and therefore cannot be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures. It noted that Usman is affiliated only with the Obidient Support Group, which backed the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

The party further criticized Usman, accusing her of lacking the moral credibility to speak on corruption due to her alleged past entanglements with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including cases involving asset forfeiture and plea bargains.

“She must clarify the sources of her numerous properties in Nigeria and abroad, her media firm in Kaduna, and her business ventures in Cameroon,” the statement added.

Regarding potential political collaborations, the party firmly dismissed any possibility of mergers or coalitions before the 2027 general elections.

“The Labour Party will contest the 2027 elections independently. There will be no further discussions on mergers or coalitions,” the statement concluded.
