Kalu reveals political frustration: Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has stated that he has never gained any personal benefit from politics, claiming instead that he has spent his own money to sustain and grow his political career.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV on June 2, Kalu, who governed Abia State from 1999 to 2007 and currently represents Abia North in the Senate, described himself primarily as a businessman who continues to invest in businesses that create employment.
He recalled contributing millions of dollars to the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998 and said he personally financed the running of Abia State during his tenure as governor.
“I spent my own money being governor just as I spend my own money as a Senator. I funded the state with my resources. That’s the truth. I didn’t benefit from being governor; rather, I lost a lot of money. The Federal Government seized many of my businesses. Politics has been more harmful to me,” Kalu said.
He further stated, “I made a lot of money before the age of 24. I didn’t gain anything from serving as governor. I was the one who contributed most of the money used in forming the PDP in 1998 and 1999. You can ask any PDP member.”

When asked how he was able to afford such contributions, Kalu attributed it to his business ventures.
“I was the biggest importer of rice, sugar, confectioneries, and other products. I was also in the petroleum business,” he explained.
“At that time, the dollar had significant value. I gave over \$1 million to President Obasanjo for his campaign and donated \$500 million to the PDP. Apart from TY Danjuma and Atiku Abubakar, very few others had the financial capacity to contribute. That’s the reality,” he added.
