JAMB denies 6am exams: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has responded to Peter Obi’s allegation that the exam body forced admission-seeking teenagers to travel in the early hours of the morning to sit for exams.
In a statement posted on his verified X account on Sunday, April 27, Obi criticized JAMB for allegedly compelling students to attend public examinations at 6:30 a.m. in unfamiliar locations, despite the prevailing insecurity across the country.
Calling the situation “reckless,” the former Anambra State governor noted that there were reports of missing students, accidents, and unnecessary trauma.
Obi wrote, “Teenagers, mostly between 15 and 17 years old, were forced to travel in the dark, through dangerous and unfamiliar areas, just to exercise their right to education and sit for JAMB exams. Scheduling exams for vulnerable teenagers as early as 6:00 a.m. is reckless. We are already hearing reports of accidents, missing students, and needless trauma. Who takes responsibility when a child goes missing or is harmed while trying to pursue an education?”

He further condemned both JAMB and the government, describing the situation as a reflection of deeper systemic failure.
In a brief counterstatement, JAMB refuted Obi’s claims, asserting that no exams were scheduled for 6:00 a.m. The board clarified that the 2025 UTME exams were set to begin at 8:00 a.m., with verification and clearance processes starting at 6:30 a.m.
“Our examinations are scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m., not 6:00 a.m. Verification and clearance begin at 6:30 a.m. to give candidates enough time to settle in,” JAMB stated.
Despite JAMB’s clarification, many Nigerians criticized the board’s explanation, questioning the rationale behind requiring teenagers to arrive at exam centres as early as 6:00 a.m.
