Police Brutality in Nigeria: Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong took to social media on May 31 to openly “celebrate” the death of CSP Ekene Nwosu, the former Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Robbery Squad at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command Headquarters.
Effiong claimed that many people in Akwa Ibom State have been rejoicing over the passing of Nwosu, with several recounting negative experiences under his command.
Describing the late officer as a “devil” who was “power drunk” and showed no regard for lawyers, human rights, or the rule of law, Effiong expressed strong condemnation of Nwosu’s alleged conduct while in service. He alleged that Nwosu was responsible for widespread abuse and dehumanization of innocent citizens, and was found culpable by courts in several rights violation cases, including ones handled by Effiong’s law firm in Uyo.

Effiong also criticized the police system for allowing Nwosu to remain in service despite numerous complaints, blaming successive police commissioners and accusing Nwosu of acting as a tool for corrupt politicians in Akwa/Ibom.
He concluded by asserting that while all humans must face death, it is important to reflect on the legacy one leaves behind. According to him, those who remember Nwosu for his “evil deeds” are justified in doing so.
