Girl drowns taking selfie: A body has been recovered amid the search for a 13-year-old schoolgirl who fell into a reservoir while out walking with her father in West Yorkshire, England.
Emergency services were called to Baitings Dam near Ripponden at 1:17 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, after the girl, from Halifax, reportedly fell over the parapet while having her photo taken. She was on a half-term walk with her father when the incident occurred, falling approximately 30 feet into the 140-foot-deep reservoir.
West Yorkshire Police, along with fire and ambulance crews, responded immediately and continued their search efforts through the evening and into the next day. On Thursday, May 29, underwater search teams recovered a body, although formal identification is still pending.
Detective Inspector Laura Hall of Calderdale’s Safeguarding Team stated, “While formal identification is yet to take place, the girl’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers. My thoughts go out to her family and friends at this very sad time. Our enquiries are continuing into the death in order to establish exactly what happened, but we do not believe it to be suspicious.”

Eyewitnesses described a heart-wrenching scene, with the girl’s father seen clutching his chest in distress and screaming her name before being taken away by ambulance.
Sue Ferris, 80, who lives near the dam, was among those who comforted the family. She criticized the lack of safety measures at the site, noting the absence of life-saving equipment such as life buoys. “The little girl was posing for photographs before this happened. Her dad had been taking the photographs. It is disgraceful that there are no life buoy rings anywhere on the parapet,” she said.
She also remarked on the metal railings added by Yorkshire Water to the stone structure, which she believes make it easier for people to climb onto the wall rather than preventing accidents.
According to Mrs. Ferris, the girl had recently secured a place at grammar school, and her family described her as having “a really bright future.” She added, “It was just dad and daughter at the reservoir when she fell in. The rest of the family arrived after the accident.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full circumstances of the tragedy.
