Mouth Disease Restrictions Eased

Germany’s Foot and Mouth Disease Restrictions Eased.

Mouth Disease Restrictions Eased: Following a comprehensive technical assessment, Great Britain has officially recognized Germany as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) free without vaccination, effective May 14, 2025. This recognition has led to the lifting of restrictions on imports of affected commodities from the containment zone in Germany.

Resumption of Exports

As a result of this decision, exports of FMD-susceptible animals, such as:

– Cattle

– Pigs

– Sheep

– Deer

– Buffaloes

and their products, including:

– Meat

– Dairy

can resume from the containment zone, provided that all other import conditions are met.

Rigorous Technical Assessment

Still on Mouth Disease Restrictions Eased

The decision to recognize Germany as FMD-free without vaccination follows a rigorous technical assessment of the measures applied in Germany and the current disease situation. This assessment ensures that Great Britain’s biosecurity is maintained while facilitating trade.

Personal Import Restrictions

While restrictions on imports of FMD-susceptible animals and products have been lifted, personal import restrictions remain in place. Travellers are still prohibited from bringing:

– Cattle, sheep, goat, and pig meat

– Dairy products

from EU countries into Great Britain for personal use. This includes items like:

– Sandwiches

– Cheese

– Cured meats

– Raw meats

– Milk

regardless of whether they are packed or packaged or bought at duty-free.

Importance of Biosecurity

FMD poses a significant risk to livestock, and livestock keepers must be rigorous about their biosecurity measures. FMD is a notifiable disease, and any suspected cases must be reported immediately.

Reporting Suspected Cases

If you suspect FMD in your animals, you must report it immediately by calling:

– 03000 200 301 in England

– 0300 303 8268 in Wales

– Your local Field Services Office in Scotland

Protecting Livestock and Food Security

The restrictions and regulations in place aim to protect the health of British livestock, the security of farmers, and the UK’s food security. By maintaining strict biosecurity measures and reporting suspected cases, livestock keepers can help prevent the spread of FMD.
