Gabon military leader victory: Gabon’s military leader, Brice Oligui Nguema, has claimed a landslide victory in the country’s presidential election, according to provisional results.
The Interior Ministry announced on Sunday, April 13, that Nguema, who led the 2023 military coup, secured approximately 90% of the vote.
His main opponent, Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, received about 3% of the vote, based on the initial results from Saturday’s election.
Still on Gabon military leader victory
Nguema, who played a pivotal role in ending the 55-year rule of the Bongo family, was widely expected to triumph in the eight-candidate race.
On election day, Bilie-By-Nze raised concerns about possible issues during the counting process, but Nguema described the electoral process as “transparent.”
After his victory, Nguema gave his first international news interview to Al Jazeera, where he vowed to “restore dignity to the Gabonese people.”
“I will give back to the people what they have given me today. And everything that has been stolen from the people, I want to return to them,” Nguema told Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem.
