Federal Government warns Nigerians against fraudulent online diplomatic job offers

Fraudulent online job offers: The Federal Government has issued a warning to Nigerians about a fraudulent online employment scheme offering fake job opportunities in the country’s diplomatic missions abroad.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs discredited the scam and clarified that it does not engage in direct recruitment.

Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa emphasized that the recruitment of Foreign Service officers is exclusively managed by the Federal Civil Service Commission.

“We want to make it clear that the Ministry does not recruit officers directly; all Foreign Service recruitment is conducted by the Federal Civil Service Commission,” Ebienfa stated.

He revealed that fraudsters have even used his name to send deceptive emails to unsuspecting individuals.

“They are sending emails with my name as the signatory. This goes beyond fake news—it’s about protecting Nigerians from being defrauded and safeguarding the Ministry’s reputation,” he said.

One such fraudulent message allegedly informed recipients that their application for diplomatic service in Juba, South Sudan, had been accepted and instructed them to pay N165,800 for a diplomatic passport.

He explained, “One of the fake messages says: ‘We are pleased to inform you that your application has been considered for diplomatic services at the Embassy of Nigeria in Juba, South Sudan to take effect 12 May 2025.’ It then instructs candidates to pay N165,800 for a diplomatic passport.”

Ebienfa dismissed the message as entirely false and reiterated that the proper diplomatic recruitment process involves selection by the Federal Civil Service Commission, training at the Foreign Service Academy, and formal deployment.

He further stressed that both diplomatic and official passports are issued at no cost.

“No Nigerian should pay for a diplomatic passport or fall for any job offer claiming to come directly from the Ministry,” he warned.

The Ministry urged the public to disregard such scams and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
