Ford halts vehicle exports to China amid escalating tariff war

Ford Halts Vehicle Exports: Ford Motor Company has announced it will suspend shipments of several vehicle models to China due to growing challenges stemming from intensifying trade tensions and retaliatory tariffs. The move impacts popular U.S.-made vehicles such as the F-150 Raptor, Mustang, Bronco SUVs built in Michigan, and Lincoln Navigators produced in Kentucky.

In a statement released Friday, the automaker said it had “adjusted exports from the U.S. to China in light of the current tariffs,” which now reach up to 150 percent on some American-manufactured models. These steep tariffs have created major obstacles for U.S. carmakers trying to stay competitive in the Chinese market.

Ford stated it will continue exporting U.S.-made engines and transmissions to China. The Lincoln Nautilus, which is produced locally in China, will not be affected by the export suspension, though it will still face high tariff rates.

Industry experts note that the unstable trade climate is taking a toll on both vehicle manufacturers and parts suppliers. According to the Centre for Automotive Research, the 25 percent tariffs on U.S. automotive imports are expected to add around $108 billion in costs to the industry by the end of 2025. Analysts caution that these expenses will likely be passed down to consumers through increased vehicle prices.

An internal memo from Ford, obtained by Reuters, revealed the company is considering potential price increases on new vehicles to help mitigate the long-term effects of the tariffs. While nearly 80 percent of the vehicles Ford sells in the U.S. are made domestically, the rising cost pressures may lead the automaker to revise its pricing strategy to preserve profitability amid ongoing trade uncertainties.
