First U.S.-born Pope: U.S. President Donald Trump has praised the election of the first American-born pope, calling it a “Great Honor” following the selection of Robert Francis Prevost, who has taken the name Pope Leo XIV, on Thursday, May 8.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!” Trump had earlier stated he had “no preference” regarding the new pope, but faced criticism from some Catholics after sharing an AI-generated image of himself as pope on social media.
Still on First U.S.-born Pope
Prevost, 69, was born in Chicago and studied at Villanova University before serving as a missionary in Peru.
He was elected and accepted his role as the Bishop of Rome and spiritual leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics earlier on Thursday.
Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away last month after more than a decade of leadership in which he significantly shaped the Church’s global image, focusing on issues such as climate change.
