VeryDarkMan’s Objection Defamation Case: Court Rejects VeryDarkMan’s Objection in N1bn Defamation Suit Filed by Falana and Falz
Justice F. Afeez of the Lagos High Court has overruled the preliminary objections filed by social commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), in the N1 billion defamation case brought against him by human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, and his son, music artist Folarin Falana, known as Falz.
According to Vanguard, while delivering the ruling on Tuesday, May 20, Justice Azeez found VDM’s application to be without merit and ordered him to pay N200,000 in costs—N100,000 each to Femi and Folarin Falana.

The court further directed VDM to file his defence without delay.
The lawsuit stems from a video posted by VDM on his Instagram page (@verydarkblackman) on September 24, 2024, which the Falanas claim was defamatory and damaging to their reputation. Each is demanding N500 million in damages, totaling N1 billion.
Femi Falana was represented in court by his legal team, Ernest Olawanle and Femi Akinyemi, while Falz appeared in person. VDM was absent but was represented by his counsel, Marvin Omorogbe.
In their claims, the Falanas allege that VDM made defamatory, libellous, and scandalous statements against them in the video. They are asking the court to declare the publication defamatory and to grant a perpetual injunction preventing VDM, his agents, or associates from making or circulating similar statements in the future.
