“The judiciary is a coequal branch of government, separate from the others with the authority to interpret the Constitution as law, and strike down, obviously, acts of Congress or acts of the president,” Roberts stated. He further explained that the judiciary’s role is not only to decide cases but also to check the excesses of Congress or the executive, requiring a degree of independence.
Roberts’ remarks drew extended applause from the gathered judges and lawyers, underscoring the importance of judicial autonomy. Notably, Roberts did not mention President Donald Trump by name, but he addressed the tension between the executive and judicial branches that has emerged since Trump’s inauguration.
Regarding calls by Trump and his allies to impeach judges who rule against his administration, Roberts referenced a statement he issued earlier in the year. “Impeachment is not how you register disagreement with decisions,” he clarified, emphasizing that the normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.
Roberts also defended the court’s decisions to overturn precedent, citing that it’s not always a bad thing to do so. “A lot of people talk as if we’re overruling a lot more. It’s the lowest it’s been since the ’50s,” he said, adding that some cases should indeed be overruled. However, he cautioned that this shouldn’t be done arbitrarily.

Roberts assured that he’s “pretty healthy” for now, stating, “I’m going out feet first”.
