Navy rescues 99 passengers in Rivers boat accident

Boat mishap in Rivers: The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder in Port Harcourt has successfully rescued 99 passengers involved in a boat accident on the Bukuma River in Degema Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, when a local market boat named Blood Of Jesus, transporting passengers and goods worth millions of naira from Port Harcourt to Akuku-Toru LGA, collided with a barge.

This was disclosed in a statement by Lieutenant Commander Bridget Bebia, the Base Information Officer in Port Harcourt.

According to Bebia, Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, Commander of NNS Pathfinder, confirmed that the ship’s personnel executed the rescue operation.

Commodore Aniaku reported that all lives were saved, and most of the passengers’ goods were successfully recovered and secured onboard.

“At about 10:55 am on April 29, 2025, a barge identified as ADAM (Damen Buba) collided head-on with a market boat headed to Akuku-Toru LGA, causing significant damage to the vessel,” the statement read.

“The incident took place in the Tuma area, roughly 300 meters from Naval Security Station (NSS) 035 along the Bukuma River in Degema LGA.

“Personnel from NNS Pathfinder stationed at NSS 035, along with four Navy Gunboats, carried out a well-coordinated search and rescue mission, saving all 99 passengers despite difficult conditions.

“Thanks to the swift and organized efforts of the rescue team, no casualties or injuries were recorded.”

Aniaku praised the personnel for their bravery and quick response, which prevented what could have been a major maritime tragedy.

“Our team responded promptly, rescuing all passengers and averting a potential disaster. Their calmness and courage throughout the operation deserve commendation,” he stated.

“Their timely actions not only saved lives but also safeguarded goods and property that were at risk.”

Commodore Cajethan Nnabuchi Aniaku further reiterated the Navy’s commitment, under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla (Admiralty Medal), to ensuring safety and security within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
