Bayern finalize Jonathan transfer: German champions Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Jonathan Tah on a free transfer from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
The 29-year-old defender, who announced in April that he would be departing Leverkusen after ten years with the club, has agreed to a contract extending until 2029 at the Allianz Arena.
After a decade with Bayer, Tah joins Bayern Munich, where he is expected to bolster their defensive line.
“I’m very happy to be at Bayern. I want to take on responsibility here and work hard every day so that we’re successful as a team and win lots of trophies together,” Tah said.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, commented, “It’s no secret that we’ve had Jonathan Tah on our radar for a long time. We appreciate his quality: he’s a character who takes on responsibility. Jonathan had many offers but chose Bayern, which pleases us greatly.”
Sporting director Christoph Freund added, “With Jonathan Tah, we’ve signed a player with international experience and quality, who won’t need much time to settle into our defence. He’ll be a valuable and important addition with his technical skills as well as his leadership and character.”
Tah made his professional breakthrough at Hamburg as a talented 17-year-old during the 2013/14 season, appearing 16 times in the Bundesliga in his debut year.

He then spent a season in Bundesliga 2 with Fortuna Düsseldorf before joining Leverkusen in 2015. The centre-back quickly became a regular starter at BayArena and progressed to become a senior German international, earning his debut in March 2016 against England.
Tah was instrumental in Xabi Alonso’s title-winning Leverkusen side in the 2023/24 season, scoring four goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances. Over his ten years at the club, he made a total of 402 competitive appearances for Die Werkself.
