Baby rescued by police: The Imo State Police Command, through its X-Squad Unit, has successfully uncovered a child-stealing syndicate, arresting four suspects and rescuing a 20-month-old girl, Chimamanda Joy, the daughter of 35-year-old visually-impaired Mrs. Joy Ekwennaya from Amuri Omanze, Isu LGA.
The operation followed an intensive investigation into a report filed by Mrs. Ekwennaya on April 8, 2025. She had been deceitfully lured to Umuahia, Abia State, by members of the syndicate, who posed as a charitable organization offering financial assistance, only to abduct her child.
Acting on credible intelligence, detectives arrested two primary suspects—Maria Nwaeze (63) of Ariam Oboro and Rejoice Odimba (29) of Ahai Eke, both from Abia State—in Aba on May 23, 2025. Their interrogation revealed vital details about the group’s operations.
Further investigation led to a follow-up operation in Aba on May 27, 2025, at around 5 p.m., where the stolen child was rescued. During the operation, another suspect, Chioma Theresa (42) of Aboh Mbaise, Imo State, was apprehended. She confessed to purchasing the child for ₦1.5 million from Gabriel Amarachi (41) of Ngwa, Aba South, Abia State, who had impersonated a Social Welfare officer.

The scheme was reportedly orchestrated by a woman identified as Precious and her husband, who remain at large. The couple was responsible for inviting Mrs. Ekwennaya to Aba under false pretenses, exploiting her vulnerability.
Efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects. Meanwhile, the rescued child was medically examined and reunited with her mother on May 28, 2025, following proper documentation.
Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to safeguarding vulnerable individuals, especially children. He emphasized that criminals have no safe haven in Imo State and urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities via the Command’s emergency lines.
Further developments will be shared as the investigation progresses.
