Museum Director to Retain $1M Position After Stripping Naked on Flight While Intoxicated

Art Institute Board Decision: The director of the Art Institute of Chicago will resume his duties on Monday, June 2, following an internal investigation into an incident in which he allegedly stripped naked while intoxicated during a flight.

James Rondeau, who earns over \$1 million annually as the museum’s president and director, voluntarily stepped away from his role after the April 18 incident aboard a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Munich. Upon arrival, he was detained by German authorities.

“I deeply regret this incident and the impact it has had on the museum, my colleagues, and myself,” Rondeau said in a statement to CBS News. “I have dedicated the past 27 years of my professional career to the Art Institute, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue furthering its mission.” Reports indicate that Rondeau had consumed alcohol and prescription medication prior to undressing mid-flight. The museum initiated an independent review while he was on leave.

Despite the controversy, the Art Institute has confirmed that Rondeau will remain in his position.

“Board leadership of the Art Institute of Chicago has conducted an independent investigation of this incident and is confident in James Rondeau’s leadership and ability to continue as the President and Director of the museum,” a spokesperson said.

Rondeau, who became director in 2016, began his tenure at the museum in 1998 as an associate curator. The Art Institute of Chicago, housing roughly 300,000 pieces, is regarded as one of the nation’s premier art museums.
