Student abuse allegations emerge: Tafara Zhou, the headmaster of Allan Wilson Boys’ High School in Zimbabwe, has been charged with aggravated indecent assault following serious allegations that he s3xually abused a student over a two-year period.

According to court records, the alleged victim—now 19—met Zhou in 2022 while seeking help with school fees. Zhou reportedly agreed to pay for the boy’s education but demanded sexual favors in return. “In June 2022, Zhou called me to his car and demanded a sexual relationship since he was paying for everything,” the student testified. “He threatened to expel me if I refused.”

The abuse allegedly continued into 2023. In January, Zhou is said to have assaulted the student in the school’s laundry room. The following month, another incident reportedly occurred at Zhou’s residence. The most severe accusations involve a 2023 school trip to Victoria Falls, during which Zhou allegedly separated the victim from other students, booked a hotel room, and abused him over three days. “It happened again on our way back to Harare,” the student said.

Zhou then allegedly seized the student’s phone, deleted evidence, and warned him not to report the abuse, claiming his influence would protect him. The case surfaced after Zhou expelled the student for seeking help from teachers to register for exams. With the support of a staff member, the student filed a report earlier this year, leading to Zhou’s arrest.

This case emerges amid another troubling scandal at Masase High School in Mberengwa, where deputy head Anymore Gumbo is accused of sexually abusing up to 35 boys. Gumbo has since gone into hiding. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the case, noting, “We are identifying victims. So far, one complaint has been recorded.”

In a letter to parents, school headmaster Albion Masukume wrote, “I write with sorrow to inform you that allegations of child abuse by one of our staff members were reported. Investigations are underway.” The abuse at Masase was reportedly uncovered through an anonymous tip to education authorities. Police are now urging additional victims to come forward.
