Army denies targeting Igbos in troop deployments, cites low enlistment from South-East as concern

Army denies targeting Igbos: The Nigerian Army has voiced concern over the low turnout of youths from the South-East in its ongoing recruitment drive, cautioning that the region risks losing its deserved representation within the military ranks.

During a town hall meeting held in Enugu, Chima Ekeator, head of the 2025 Army Recruitment Enlightenment Team, noted that the South-East was increasingly becoming underrepresented due to the consistently low number of applicants.

“Our people are missing out on what is rightfully theirs. Every year, when recruitment slots are allocated, we observe a significantly low number of applicants from this region,” Ekeator said.

Using Enugu State as an example, he pointed out that despite having about 200 recruitment slots for the year, fewer than 100 applications had been submitted.

Still on Army denies targeting Igbos:

“For instance, Enugu State was allotted around 200 positions, but less than 100 applicants came forward. This pattern is repeating across other South-Eastern states as well,” he added.

Ekeator urged young people in the region to seize the opportunity and apply, stressing that other regions were showing far greater interest. He mentioned that Kaduna State had already seen over 3,000 applicants.

“As of today, Kaduna has approximately 3,000 applications, whereas Enugu is still struggling with just around 100. Once the screening is completed, we may not even have enough qualified candidates from the state,” he warned.

He also refuted widespread claims that Igbo recruits are deliberately deployed to high-risk combat zones, leading to higher casualty rates among them. He insisted that such allegations are baseless.

“There’s a lot of misinformation suggesting that Igbos are being killed first because they’re sent to the battlefield before others. This is simply not true. Many of us have advanced through the ranks, and we are here to tell you these claims are false,” Ekeator clarified.

He further highlighted that South-Easterners hold important positions within the Nigerian Army. “Today, one of our own, Chibueze Ogbuabor, is a top commander responsible for military equipment,” he noted.
