Operation Spiderweb: Ukraine destroys over a third of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet in daring drone strikes.

Ukraine’s audacious “Operation Spider’s Web” has dealt a significant blow to Russia’s air power, destroying or damaging over a third of its strategic bomber fleet. The operation was meticulously planned over 18 months, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally overseeing the effort.

The planning and execution of the operation were complex and sophisticated. Ukrainian agents smuggled drones into Russia, hiding them in roofs and trucks. The drones were then launched from nearby locations using concealed trucks, catching Russian forces off guard.

The targets of the drone strikes were five major Russian military airbases deep inside Russian territory. The drones struck 41 Russian aircraft, including long-range Tu-95 and Tu-22M bombers used by Moscow to launch missile attacks on Ukraine. Additionally, A-50 radar planes, which are crucial for Russia’s air defense operations, were also targeted.

The damage assessment of the operation is significant. Ukraine’s security service estimates the damage at $7 billion, affecting 34% of Russia’s strategic cruise missile delivery platforms. Independent OSINT analysts have confirmed damage to at least 13 bombers via satellite imagery and drone footage.

The Russian response to the drone strikes was swift, with officials labeling the attacks a “terrorist attack” and acknowledging fires at multiple bases. The operation also had a significant impact on Russian stock markets, causing a sharp drop in values.

The timing of the strike is also noteworthy. The operation came just one day before direct peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul. Additionally, the strike occurred shortly after Russia launched its largest missile and drone barrage since the start of the invasion, killing 13 civilians in Ukraine.

The success of “Operation Spider’s Web” showcases Ukraine’s capabilities in covert military operations and highlights the vulnerability of Russia’s airbases to drone attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called the attack “brilliant” and said it would be remembered in history books.

The operation demonstrates Ukraine’s determination to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its willingness to take bold action against Russian aggression. As the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues, it is likely that Ukraine will continue to develop and implement innovative military strategies to counter Russian aggression.
