Biden’s first public address: Former U.S. President Joe Biden made his first public statement since his office announced earlier this month that he had been diagnosed with “aggressive” prostate cancer.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, May 30, Biden said he felt “optimistic” about his outlook.
“The prognosis is good. We’re working through everything. It’s progressing well. So, I feel good,” he stated.
He confirmed he had chosen a treatment plan and would be taking several medications.
“The expectation is that we’re going to beat this… it hasn’t spread to any organs. My bones are strong. It hasn’t penetrated, so I’m feeling good,” he added, noting that his family also shares his optimism and that “one of the leading surgeons in the world” is involved in his care.
Biden’s office had previously disclosed that there was “metastasis to the bone.”
When questioned about ongoing concerns over his mental and physical fitness while in office, Biden quipped with a smile, “You can see that – I’m mentally incompetent and I can’t walk.”

Addressing criticisms from Democrats who said he shouldn’t have sought re-election, Biden replied, “Why didn’t they run against me then? Because I’d have beaten them.” He emphasized he has no regrets.
“There’s a lot going on. I think we’re at a very challenging moment—not just in American history, but globally. We’re at one of those turning points in history where the decisions we make soon will shape the next 20 years,” he said, expressing pride in his presidential record.
On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that former First Lady Jill Biden should “speak up about what she saw regarding her husband, when she saw it, and what she knew,” accusing her of being dishonest.
When asked about Leavitt’s comments, Biden smiled and said, “I don’t know who the press secretary is,” but later clarified he was joking, acknowledging that the media would likely take the comment literally.
