300,000 student visas revoked: The Trump administration in the United States is set to begin revoking visas for certain Chinese students.
According to a statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security will take decisive action to revoke visas for Chinese students, particularly those with links to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying in sensitive academic fields.
Rubio also noted that visa criteria will be revised to intensify the scrutiny of all future visa applications from China and Hong Kong.
In the 2023/2024 academic year, China ranked second in the number of international students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions, with a total of 277,398 students, based on data from the Institute of International Education.
Speaking from the Oval Office on Wednesday, the president said, “I want to make sure that the foreign students are people who can love our country.”
Reports indicate that the administration has expanded its social media screening procedures for foreign students and is looking to increase deportations and revoke student visas, aligning with the president’s stringent immigration policy.
On Tuesday, U.S. embassies were instructed to suspend all student visa processing as part of the president’s broader crackdown on the higher education sector.
Still on 300,000 student visas revoked
Rubio further instructed officials to halt the scheduling of student visa appointments while preparations are made for the implementation of enhanced social media screening.
“Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued septel, which we anticipate in the coming days,” the directive stated.
