WAEC clarifies exam delays

WAEC clarifies reason behind late-night WASSCE examinations across Nigeria.

WAEC clarifies exam delays: The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has attributed the delay in administering the 2025 English Language examination on Wednesday, May 28, to intensified measures aimed at curbing examination malpractice.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina, on Thursday, May 29, to *The Cable*, WAEC acknowledged the disruption experienced by candidates due to the late commencement of Paper 2 of the English Language exam.

The council explained that its efforts to prevent the leakage of exam questions inadvertently caused logistical issues, which disrupted the smooth flow of the exam.

“Although we successfully secured the examination materials, it unintentionally affected the timely and seamless conduct of the exercise,” the statement said.

WAEC also pointed to other factors that contributed to the delay, such as logistical constraints, security challenges, and sociocultural circumstances. It added that it is collaborating with security agencies to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The council extended its apologies to students, schools, and parents for the inconvenience caused and expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their understanding during what it called a “challenging period.”

WAEC reiterated its dedication to maintaining the integrity of its examinations and fostering academic excellence across the region.

“We recognise the significance of conducting exams as scheduled and understand the effects such delays have on candidates, their schools, and their families,” Adesina stated.

Although the 2025 WASSCE English examination was slated for May 28, it was conducted several hours behind schedule in various centres across Nigeria, forcing students to write late into the night, relying on candles and phone flashlights for visibility.
