Oil Production Restart Ogoniland: National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has revealed that oil production will soon recommence in Ogoniland, over 30 years after activities were halted in the area. He made this announcement on Thursday during a presentation at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national summit in Abuja.
Ribadu described the development as one of the key accomplishments of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, noting that Nigeria’s oil output has reached an average of 1.8 million barrels per day in 2025.
He reported marked progress in the fight against oil theft and vandalism, highlighting a 47 percent reduction in such incidents. According to him, security forces have shut down 1,978 illegal refineries and destroyed 3,849 dugout pits along with 3,773 illegal cooking ovens as part of ongoing enforcement efforts.
Ribadu credited “Operation Delta Safe,” a collaborative initiative involving all branches of the nation’s security agencies, with significantly improving security in oil-producing areas.
Plans to restart oil operations in Ogoniland were initially announced by President Tinubu earlier in his tenure. In March, the Ogoni dialogue committee concluded its consultations on the issue and is expected to submit its report to the federal government soon.

Oil production in Ogoniland was suspended in 1993 due to prolonged environmental degradation, health risks, and persistent community opposition. Between 1976 and 1991, over two million barrels of oil were spilled in nearly 3,000 incidents. Even after operations ceased, a 2017 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report found that communities in the region continued to suffer from daily exposure to toxic hydrocarbons.
In 2019, the Shell Petroleum Development Company reported a fresh oil spill in Ebubu, Eleme Local Government Area of Ogoniland, highlighting ongoing environmental challenges.
While the planned resumption of oil production brings the promise of economic renewal, it also reignites concerns about environmental protection and meaningful community involvement in a region long marked by marginalisation.
