PDP Has Incurable Virus: Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has revealed that political leaders working to form a strong opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections have excluded the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a viable platform.
Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Wednesday, May 21, Lawal said the coalition’s technical committee is currently debating whether to register a new party or revive and restructure an existing one.
He confirmed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is a dedicated member of the group leading the coalition, which aims to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming election. The coalition is made up of like-minded politicians united against the current ruling party.
When asked why the PDP has not been considered as the coalition’s base, despite Atiku’s involvement, Lawal responded bluntly: “In all the meetings I’ve attended so far, nobody has ever considered adopting the PDP as the platform. We all agree that PDP has an incurable virus. No antibiotics can cure what is ailing the PDP, and we don’t want to enter a house that we cannot modify and that is not willing to change.”

Lawal also acknowledged the growing public curiosity about their political platform and promised that an official announcement would be made soon to clarify the coalition’s direction. His comments hint that Atiku may eventually leave the PDP, which continues to struggle with internal conflicts following its 2023 presidential election defeat.
The PDP has been grappling with an ongoing leadership crisis, especially concerning the national secretary position contested between Sunday Ude-Okoye and Samuel Anyanwu. Despite efforts at reconciliation, divisions within the party persist, weakening its position as a united opposition force.
Lawal’s statements highlight the coalition’s intent to create a fresh, unified political structure separate from existing parties, signaling a possible shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
