Seyi Shay Criticizes Hymns

“Ignorance Is NOT Godly” — Singer Seyi Shay criticizes colonial-era hymns in church.

Seyi Shay Criticizes Hymns:  Nigerian music star Seyi Shay is sparking a bold conversation about church music and its impact.

In a candid Instagram story, she explained why she stopped attending her former church—not because of doctrine or drama, but because of the songs being sung.

She revealed that a church leader insisted the congregation only sing hymns and scriptures, rejecting contemporary gospel songs.

Her reaction?

“I stopped going to that church. PERIODT.”

Seyi Shay questioned how anyone could feel “blessed and happy” singing hymns originally written by slave owners and forced upon enslaved Africans during times of torture and dehumanization.

Still on Seyi Shay Criticizes Hymns

“Makes no sense,” she wrote. “Do your research! Ignorance is NOT Godly!”

She acknowledged that not all hymns have such troubling origins but stressed that many do. She encouraged creating new praise and worship songs based on scripture if preferred.

While traditional hymns remain meaningful to some Christians, others support Seyi Shay’s call for awareness, context, and spiritual freedom.
